About Us - Who We Are
MISSION STATEMENT & GOALS
To inform, empower and support individuals, groups, organizations and businesses to capitalize on opportunities
Abbotsford Spirit of BC Community Committee (ASBC) is focused on:
- providing Abbotsford and surrounding communities with a local point of contact in relation to capitalizing on unique opportunities and activities before, during and after the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games; and
- building community spirit and developing sustainable legacies in sports and recreation, arts and culture, literacy, volunteerism and inclusion.
We will accomplish this through:
Arts, Culture & Heritage Our goal is to strengthen and enhance the creative capacity of individuals, groups and organizations in our community. Investments will foster growth and development which in turn will create further positive relationships and events within Abbotsford’s arts, culture and heritage community.
Business, Commerce & Procurement One of the main functions of ASBC is to provide local businesses access to 2010 related opportunities. By hosting the 2010 Business Access Site, featuring the BC Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Secretariat’s 2010 Commerce Centre, ASBC will inform and educate local businesses on the many opportunities directly or indirectly related to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Literacy & Learning The Premier has charged BC with a goal of making this province the most literate place in the world! There are new literacy challenges in our changing world, new forms of communication and expanding use of technology. Changing demands at school, in the workplace and in the community require innovative and more inclusive community responses. Please join the Abbotsford effort to improve literacy in our city! Find out more about Literacy Now and how we can all be involved in a fun, productive and positive way.
Sports Tourism Abbotsford's Sport Town Canada website is an exceptional resource for event planners and sports organizations. ASBC supports Tourism Abbotsford in this initiative by offering resources to assist with research and information updating. Through 2010 Legacies Now, ASBC will work within the community to support initiatives such as the 20% Challenge. ASBC will also provide support to organizations who currently host sporting events and those that wish to attract future events to the City. ASBC will increase children’s awareness of the value of participating in sports and the arts. Through the Volunteer Abbotsford Centre - ASBC can provide sports and event organizations with volunteer support.
Tourism & International Opportunities ASBC is working in partnership with Tourism Abbotsford and the City of Abbotsford to encourage visitors to make Abbotsford their destination. They will identify and invite relevant Olympic and Paralympic teams to train and acclimate in Abbotsford before, during and after the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Volunteerism - Volunteer Abbotsford Centre Through Volunteer Abbotsford - ASBC is working with community partners the Fraser Valley Volunteer Support Network, City of Abbotsford-Parks & Recreation and 2010 Legacies Now - Volunteers Now to increase volunteer recruitment and retention. Engaging volunteers in every sector, offering training opportunities and resources, highlighting the importance of inclusiveness will be a major focus for all of the volunteer programs offered through Volunteer Abbotsford Centre - located at the ASBC offices.
